Local to choose president early in new year

Halifax Typographical Union | CWA Canada Local 30130

An election to determine who is to be the next president of the Halifax Typographical Union is to be held Jan. 9.

Darren Pittman, who has held the position for two terms, says he's "taking a break for two years." He will, however, remain on CWA Canada's national executive as a Member at Large.

Susan Bradley and Peter Duffy, both of whom work in the newsroom at the Halifax ChronicleHerald, were nominated to lead the Local at the annual general meeting. Bradley had previously served three terms on the executive as secretary. Duffy was active in the union at another newspaper for which he worked.

Three other positions on the executive were filled by acclamation:

Grey Guy is the new treasurer, while Mike Lightstone takes up the job of secretary. The former secretary, Rick Conrad, is now Vice-President Newsroom.

Pittman says vice-presidents for composing and the pressroom are two positions yet to be filled.

Although his tenure as president was relatively short, Pittman chalked up significant victories in several down-to-the-wire battles with management. He also was the first recipient of a CWA Canada organizing award for bringing the newspaper's pressmen into the fold.
