New officers thrust into battle to save composing
room

It's baptism by fire for three new officers
of the Halifax Typographical Union, which is determined to
thwart the employer's intentions to do away with the composing
room at the Halifax ChronicleHerald.
Darren Pittman, who replaces Pat Lee as president, has for
three years been the photo/library department representative
and was a member of last year's newsroom bargaining team.
David MacNeil, who replaces Pat White as vice-president
of the composing room, is a long-time employee and a member
of the team currently negotiating a new contract for the
newspaper's 12 compositors.
Christine Soucie-Madill, who takes
over from Gordie Sutherland as vice-president of the newsroom,
is a features editor who was part of the health benefits
committee that worked with the company to choose a new
provider. As well, she was part of last year’s newsroom
bargaining team that negotiated a new four-year deal.
All three officers were acclaimed to their positions at
a general membership meeting in December. The Guild Local's
executive includes Susan Bradley, secretary, and Judy Myrden,
treasurer.
