Fundraising begins for John Belcarz Memorial
Award
OTTAWA | TNG
Canada
All Locals and individual members of the
TNG Sector of CWA are being asked to consider making financial
contributions to the award in memory of John
Belcarz, who
died in October 2003 after a heroic battle with cancer. The
long-time Guild activist was 51 years of age.
Each recipient of the John Belcarz Memorial Award will be
a Canadian Guild member who embodies the attributes most
often associated with the former president of the Montreal
Newspaper Guild: fairness, hard work and an unselfish determination
to further the cause of the Canadian labour movement.
The creation
of the award was announced on Oct. 16, 2004,
and the Representative Council of TNG Canada/CWA voted unanimously
at its meeting in Montreal to set aside $5,000 to establish
the award. However, additional funds will be required to
sustain the award, including the commissioning of a trophy
to be presented to winners and the accompanying cash awards.
A committee of members of the Belcarz family, the Montreal
Local and the executive committee of TNG Canada/CWA will
commission the trophy, develop the award criteria and set
in place a process by which nominations will be encouraged,
received and adjudicated.
The goal of the committee is to have everything in place
so the first award can be presented in 2005.
All contributions will be greatly appreciated.
Yours in solidarity,
The Executive of TNG Canada/CWA
