Dynamic union leader succumbs to cancer
Arnold Amber, Director of TNG Canada/CWA, made the following
announcement to Locals across the country today:
It is with deep regret and sorrow that I have to inform
you that John Belcarz, the dynamic and resourceful President
of the Montreal Newspaper Guild, passed away overnight
in a Montreal hospital.
As many of you know, John was stricken with cancer earlier this year. He
was only 51 years old. John is survived by his wife Mary and two sons Mark
and Paul.
I know all of you will be very upset over John's passing. He was a tremendous
human being and a great union leader.
John was a tower of strength during the past two turbulent years of battles
between the Montreal Newspaper Guild (TNG Canada Local 30111) and CanWest
Global over the company's national editorial policy and other disputes. He
also made a valuable contribution on the National and International scenes
as a member of the Executive Committee of TNG Canada/CWA.
John was a man who gave his all for his family and his union members and
will be sorely missed.
I know all of you join me in expressing our deepest condolences to his family
and to all the members of the Montreal Newspaper Guild.
