The growing precarity of media work and the decline in labour reporting at most media outlets led CWA Canada Associate Members to spend the past six months creating resources and supports for emerging media workers.
As part of the Media Works project, they have produced a handbook and 14 audio documentaries, long-form articles and graphic journalism pieces that critically explore labour issues.
The first part of the Media Works handbook provides media workers with the tools they need to ensure they are treated fairly as interns, volunteers, freelancers and employees. From how to negotiate rates of pay, to what to look for in an internship contract, to what rights they have under employment law.
The second half of the handbook focuses on labour reporting and contains tips on how to cover a strike, advice from seasoned labour reporters and an overview of the basic knowledge necessary for media workers to engage in labour reporting.
The reporting pieces and the handbook can be found at Media-Works.org. Print copies of the booklet can also be made available upon request.
Please share widely with student, intern and precarious media workers.
The project was officially released last month at an event in Toronto. Check out the highlights and photos on Story Board.
