CWA Canada Associate Members launch Media Works

Media Works, a labour rights and reporting project that is the brainchild of CWA Canada Associate Members, will officially launch in Toronto on April 29.

The evening features a moderated discussion, specially commissioned labour reporting articles, audio documentaries, graphic journalism pieces and a freshly minted handbook to help media organizations and creators know their rights and better report on labour issues.

The event is free as are the snacks and drinks to carry everyone through from 6 to 9 p.m. at The Foundery, 376 Bathurst St. in Toronto. You can get tickets at Eventbrite and check out the action on Facebook.

Media Works is funded by CWA Canada and done in collaboration with the National Campus and Community Radio Association and the Canadian University Press. The launch party is co-presented by Mayworks Festival of Working People and the Arts (see full schedule at mayworks.ca).

The moderated discussion is with contributors to the project:

Haseena manek, one of the writers of the handbook, on why we created a guide to labour reporting and media worker rights, and how it will be useful to all types of media workers.

Maggie Reid, a Ryerson University student, on her article on the barriers to accessing careers in journalism and the role of community media in training journalists.

Arman Aghbali, a contributor to The Scope, Ryerson’s radio station, on his piece about labour issues in the world of Canadian IT startups.

Sara Tatelman, a freelance journalist, on her exploration of the role and responsibility of journalism schools in promoting internships.

Errol Salamon, a PhD candidate in communication studies at McGill University, on how freelance journalists in Canada have been collectively organizing against rights-grabbing contracts.

The discussion will be moderated by Sharmeen Khan, a long-time community media worker and volunteer.
