Memorial scholarship winners eye careers in digital world

For the winners of this year’s $1,000 Belcarz-Zeidler Memorial Scholarships, their academic pursuits and career aspirations are rooted in a digital world.

Tamra Henry, the daughter of Stephen Henry, a member of the Montreal Newspaper Guild who works in advertising at The Gazette, is currently in her second year at Concordia University. She is seeking a degree in Fine Arts, majoring in photography.

Aidan Crawley, the son of Mark Crawley, who is a producer at CBC Toronto and a member of the Canadian Media Guild, will this fall be heading off to Brock University in St. Catharines, Ont. He was attracted to the Interactive Arts and Science program, which prepares students for a future in “digital media innovation, combined with the humanities.”

Tamra had previously attended Dawson College, studying professional (commercial) photography. “After three years ... I realized there was so much more to a camera than just being able to make images for the sole purpose of making money. I wanted to create images that could create a deep, emotional connection with the viewer,” she wrote.

Having completed high school at 17, Aidan took some time off to work and travel until he could identify a rewarding career path. That life experience steered him toward a future in which he could make a difference. “Careers designing webs, developing software, digital graphics and 3-D modelling are areas in which I can see myself working.”

There were 12 applicants for the scholarships this year. They were established in 2010 in honour of union activists John Belcarz and Dan Zeidler, with the intention of aiding in the personal development and enrichment of those to whom they are granted.
