Barbara Saxberg is stepping down from her post as Eastern Canada Vice-President for The Newspaper Guild-CWA, to which she was first elected in 2008.
The longtime union activist retired in February from the CBC, where for more than 25 years she worked as an editor, producer and host in Network Radio.
Saxberg was Director of Education for the Canadian Media Guild, CWA Canada’s largest Local, and pioneered many of the Guild’s training programs. She was also a member of the Canadian Labour Congress’s Education Advisory Committee.
Her efforts and accomplishments won her the CMG’s 2014 Meritorious Service Award, the highest honour bestowed by the Local.
As Eastern VP, Saxberg sits on the executive of both CWA Canada and TNG, representing union members whose workplace is east of Manitoba.
Saxberg says she initially planned to remain in office until the end of the year, but came to believe that, by not being on the “shop floor” as an employee, she could not properly represent the interests of the members.
CWA Canada President Martin O’Hanlon praised Saxberg’s dedication to labour education, noting that her work has been a tremendous success at engaging members in their union.
“Barbara’s tenacious commitment to education has been a boon for the union,” O’Hanlon said.
“Through the courses she has run, hundreds of members have come to realize the good the union does and many of them have become volunteers, activists and elected leaders.
“I thank Barbara for her work and dedication and I encourage everyone to read the feature on her in the next edition of CWeh! Canada, our quarterly eNewsletter.”
