CWA Canada announces winners of memorial scholarships

Madison Haslam and Katherine Tikkanen are the 2013 winners of the Belcarz-Zeidler Memorial Scholarships sponsored by CWA Canada.

Madison, the daughter of Ottawa Newspaper Guild member Joel Haslam, who works at CTV Ottawa, will be entering the Bachelor of Journalism program in September at the University of King's College in Halifax. Her winning essay describes her lifelong predilection for storytelling and her desire to pursue a career in communications.

Katherine, the daughter of Meribeth Tikkanen, who works for CBC Vancouver and is a member of the Canadian Media Guild, writes about her dedication to making the world a more accepting place for diversity. She has an extensive and impressive track record of volunteer work, which she vows to continue while pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce at the University of Calgary.

The $1,000 bursaries, established in 2010 in honour of union activists John Belcarz and Dan Zeidler, are intended to aid in the personal development and enrichment of those to whom they are granted. There were 15 entries this year.
