First CWA Canada / CAJ Labour Reporting Award
goes to HuffPo journalist

The Canadian Association of Journalists' inaugural labour reporting award sponsored by CWA Canada has gone to a business reporter with Huffington Post Canada.

Rachel Mendleson won the $1,000 prize for the feature "Income inequality and the decline of unions" which was posted in the online publication on Dec. 12, 2011.

"This is exactly the kind of reporting we want to encourage: a well-written, well-researched piece that clearly explains a labour issue Canadians should be very concerned about," said CWA Canada Director Martin O'Hanlon.

"Rachel combines one man's story with statistics and expert commentary to show that the decline in union membership is closely linked to the decline of the middle class — and illustrating the danger that poses to society."

It was one of 16 awards presented last night at the CAJ gala in Toronto. Among the winners were several members of CWA Canada:

Jorge Barrera, Kenneth Jackson (open television category) of APTN National News for Barrera Carsons.

Timothy Sawa, Diana Swain, Angela Gilbert (open television) of the CBC's the fifth estate for Scout's Honour.

Charles Rusnell, Grant Gelinas (regional television) of CBC Edmonton for Pork barrel politics; and (open radio news / current affairs) Crown conduct.

Andrew Stobo Sniderman (print feature) of the Montreal Gazette for Residential schools: Survivors share the pain.

Natalie Clancy, Manjula Dufresne (scoop) of CBC Vancouver for Broken Mounties.

Alison Crawford (CAJ Award for Human Rights Reporting) of CBC Radio One / Dispatches for The eyes of Rosa and Antonio.
