Be a member, be a mentor! New project to help student journalists

CWA Canada has forged a unique partnership with a national student news service in an effort to add Unions 101 to the learning lineup for aspiring journalists.

Katherine Lapointe has been hired on a five-month contract as a membership and mentorship co-ordinator.

She is working with the Canadian University Press (CUP) to sign up associate members for CWA Canada and arrange mentorships between students and journalists in the union's Locals.

"We're excited to partner with CUP on this innovative and progressive initiative that will give students invaluable education and experience working with professional journalists," says CWA Canada Director Martin O'Hanlon.

"It will also show the students the good, selfless work unions do, and hopefully lay the foundation for future members to stand up for workplace and social justice."

The project, supported by a grant from CWA's Strategic Industry Fund, is designed to help student journalists learn the craft and educate them on the positive role unions play in the workplace and society.
