"Kerry's friends and colleagues at the Leader-Post are thrilled that she's been selected for this prestigious award,” says Heather Polischuk, acting president of the Saskatchewan Media Guild. “We've had a chance to watch Kerry grow and develop as a reporter and a writer and we feel she is very deserving of this honour. We are all so proud of her."

Benjoe, whom Polischuk describes as “a wonderful person as well as a talented journalist” is also a member of CWA|SCA Canada’s Human Rights and Equity Committee.

Women of the Dawn, a Regina-based organization, holds the annual awards to recognize the work of Saskatchewan First Nations members in a variety of fields.

In a story that appeared in her newspaper, Benjoe said she had intended to pursue a law career while at First Nations University of Canada. But a year-long internship at the Leader-Post in 2006 led to a full-time position as a general assignment reporter.

Benjoe said she hoped her experience might entice others into a journalism career.
