Members sure to clean up
in Atlantic
Journalism Awards
Members of CWA Canada are expected to totally
dominate the Atlantic Journalism Awards (AJA) when they are
presented in Halifax on May 8.
CBC Radio and Television journalists,
all of whom belong to the union's largest Local, the Canadian
Media Guild (CMG), swamped the broadcast nominations. Among
publications, the Telegraph-Journal led with nine
nominations (five for members of the Saint John Typographical
Union), followed by the Halifax Chronicle-Herald with seven
(five for members of the Halifax Typographical Union).
A winner will be chosen in each of 30 categories in the
competition, which is open to media outlets in New Brunswick,
Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador.
Telegraph-Journal photographer Noel Chenier received two
nominations, while page designer Angie Kippers, reporter
Andrew McGilligan, and arts and entertainment writer Kate
Wallace received one each.
Chenier got the nods for a picture
of a raging house fire and for a portrait of two people
whose sons died in an accident. McGilligan is up for a
feature writing award for a story entitled “Long journeys home,” which detailed
one man’s quest to find the rightful owner of a memento
that belonged to a Second World War casualty. Wallace is
a contender for a feature on a Saint John painter, the layout
for which earned Kippers her nomination.
At the Chronicle-Herald, union members
with nominations include: in Spot News, South Shore bureau
chief Bev Ware for her story about a mother’s admission
that she killed her daughter, and Tera Camus, former Cape
Breton bureau chief, for a story about courtroom chaos
after an acquittal at a murder trial. Judy Myrden is nominated
for Business Reporting for her story on tidal technology
in the Bay of Fundy. Nadine Fownes is up for honours for
best page presentation in the newspapers category while
Laura Fraser, in Cape Breton, will compete for the Jim
MacNeill New Journalist Award.
