Union members rack up
journalism awards nominations

More than a dozen members of CWA Canada are among the finalists for 2007 National Newspaper Awards.

"Such a large number of nominees attests to the quality of journalism produced by our members," says Director Arnold Amber.

The Ottawa Citizen's Bruno Schlumberger, a member of the Ottawa Newspaper Guild (ONG), is a finalist in two photographic categories: News Feature, for a photo of retired military nursing sisters having a snack at the National Military Cemetery; and Feature, for a photo from France of a painter hiding his face from the camera alongside a self-portrait.

Other ONG members at the Citizen who have been nominated include:

Maria Cook (Explanatory Work) for a story on an engineering revolution that makes it faster and safer to replace aging bridges.

In the Politics category: Gary Dimmock, for the alleged political backdoor negotiations of mayoral candidate Terry Kilrea and Ottawa Mayor Larry O'Brien; Kathryn May, for stories about the mismanagement of the RCMP pension and insurance funds.

Two staffers at the Kingston Whig-Standard and members of the Kingston Typographical Union are among the finalists: Frank Armstrong (Beat Reporting) for crime and justice reporting; and Ann Lukits (Local Reporting) for stories on declining care for seniors and a shortage of doctors in nursing homes.

Three journalists who work for The Canadian Press and are members of the Canadian Media Guild have been nominated for NNAs:

Paul Chiasson (Sports Photography) for a photo of a Canadian hockey player upside down after a check from a Russian player; Jim Bronskill and Sue Bailey (Investigations) for an in-depth look into the use of tasers by police forces.

Two writers at The Gazette and members of the Montreal Newspaper Guild are nominees: Linda Gyulai (Explanatory Work) for an examination of the city’s crumbling water system from reservoir to sewers; and Sue Montgomery (Long Features) for an article on Dawson College shooter Kimveer Gill.

The Victoria Times-Colonist has two finalists: Darren Stone (Sports Photography) for an all-out stretch by the ball carrier to reach the end zone in a football game; and Les Leyne (Columns). Both are members of the Victoria-Vancouver Island Newspaper Guild.

The Halifax ChronicleHerald is in the running for Special Project, thanks to a series of stories by photographer Christian Laforce and reporter Chris Lambie in Afghanistan, focusing on the 2nd Battalion, Royal Canadian Regiment, based in the Maritimes.

In all, there were 63 finalists in 21 categories. They were selected from among 1,408 entries from 22 news organizations.

The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in Toronto on May 9. Winners receive a $1,500 cash award, while runners-up receive $250 each. The awards, founded by the Toronto Press Club in 1949, are administered from the NNA office at the Canadian Newspaper Association.
