Union members rack up
journalism
awards nominations
More than a dozen members of CWA
Canada are among the finalists for 2007 National Newspaper
Awards.
"Such a large number of nominees attests to the
quality of journalism produced by our members," says
Director Arnold Amber.
The Ottawa Citizen's Bruno
Schlumberger, a member
of the Ottawa Newspaper Guild (ONG), is a finalist
in two photographic categories: News Feature, for a
photo of retired military nursing sisters having a
snack at the National Military Cemetery; and Feature,
for a photo from France of a painter hiding his face
from the camera alongside a self-portrait.
Other ONG members at the Citizen who have been nominated
include:
Maria Cook (Explanatory Work) for a story on an engineering
revolution that makes it faster and safer to replace
aging bridges.
In the Politics category: Gary
Dimmock, for the alleged
political backdoor negotiations of mayoral candidate
Terry Kilrea and Ottawa Mayor Larry O'Brien; Kathryn
May, for stories about the mismanagement of the RCMP
pension and insurance funds.
Two staffers at the Kingston
Whig-Standard and members
of the Kingston Typographical Union are among the finalists:
Frank Armstrong (Beat Reporting) for crime and justice
reporting; and Ann Lukits (Local Reporting) for stories
on declining care for seniors and a shortage of doctors
in nursing homes.
Three journalists who work for The Canadian Press
and are members of the Canadian Media Guild have been
nominated for NNAs:
Paul Chiasson (Sports Photography) for a photo of
a Canadian hockey player upside down after a check
from a Russian player; Jim Bronskill and Sue
Bailey (Investigations) for an in-depth look into the use
of tasers by police forces.
Two writers at The
Gazette and members of the Montreal Newspaper Guild are nominees:
Linda Gyulai (Explanatory Work) for an examination
of the city’s crumbling
water system from reservoir to sewers; and Sue
Montgomery (Long Features) for an article on Dawson College shooter
Kimveer Gill.
The Victoria
Times-Colonist has two finalists: Darren
Stone (Sports Photography) for an all-out stretch by
the ball carrier to reach the end zone in a football
game; and Les Leyne (Columns). Both are members of
the Victoria-Vancouver Island Newspaper Guild.
The Halifax
ChronicleHerald is in the running for
Special Project, thanks to a series of stories by photographer
Christian Laforce and reporter Chris
Lambie in Afghanistan,
focusing on the 2nd Battalion, Royal Canadian Regiment,
based in the Maritimes.
In all, there were 63 finalists in 21 categories.
They were selected from among 1,408 entries from 22
news organizations.
The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony
in Toronto on May 9. Winners receive a $1,500 cash
award, while runners-up receive $250 each. The awards,
founded by the Toronto Press Club in 1949, are administered
from the NNA office at the Canadian Newspaper Association.
