"I am excited about the prospect of filling this position," says Kirkup. "My many years of experience will be an asset to the executive of The Newspaper Guild-CWA and my style of leadership will bring a different perspective to its meetings."

Kirkup, a librarian at The Ottawa Citizen, has been involved with the Ottawa Newspaper Guild since 1995. Elected its president in 1999, she had previously held various positions including secretary and vice-president. Over that time she has negotiated two contracts, was involved in several arbitrations and attended all but one of TNG Canada's National Representative Council meetings.

She has also been busy on the TNG Canada/CWA executive, first as a member-at-large and now as Secretary. "Some of my secretarial duties include involvement in the management committee and dealing with staffing issues," says Kirkup.

Other TNG Canada activities include:

  • Member of Communications Committee since 1998 and its chair for many years;

  • Member of the CanWest Global Caucus;

  • Created and maintained the first TNG Canada website.

"As president of a medium-sized Local, I am experienced in dealing with a variety of issues which all of our Locals have faced at one time or another," says Kirkup. "I am determined to represent all Canadian Locals at the international level of our union and will make sure all their concerns are heard and addressed."

The Eastern Canada VP position came open at the end of March with the resignation of Jan Ravensbergen. Nominations for the position will be presented at the TNG-CWA sector conference in July. If more than one nomination is received, that will necessitate a secret-ballot election in which all members of TNG Canada East (those east of the Manitoba-Ontario border) are eligible to vote.
