It was painting with a flourish and a purpose.

For the second consecutive year, members of the Ottawa Newspaper Guild and their families took part in a paint-a-thon at Ottawa’s downtown Mission, a home for indigent men that not only sleeps up to 300 men a night but also feeds and clothes men, women and children.

The Ottawa Local adopted the Mission as its charity two years ago and stages an annual work day, which has resulted in two days of painting. The Local also pays for the paint it uses and this year, for the first time, solicited from its members donations of clothing, food and toiletries for the facility.

This year’s event was held Saturday, April 8, and attracted 15 volunteers who donned their work duds and set to it. Two offices and a hallway, including baseboards and frames, were painted.

The Local wholly supports a resolution adopted at last year’s sector conference in Victoria that encourages Locals to get involved in their community.
