Regina Leader-Post sports reporter Ian
Hamilton is the recipient of the 2005 Fred Sgambati - Media
Award.
Hamilton, a member of the Saskatchewan
Media Guild, was presented with the award during Canadian
Interuniversity Sport's annual meeting in Aylmer, Que., on
June 9. The award recognizes a media member's major contribution
to the development and growth of Canadian university sport.
A graduate of the University of Regina's
journalism school and employed by the Leader-Post since
1989, Hamilton has been the beat reporter of University of
Regina athletics for more than six years. He continued his
outstanding coverage during the 2004-05 season, filing more
than 250 stories on Cougars and Rams teams, including complete
coverage of the CIS women's basketball and track & field
championships.
Hamilton, who became the inaugural
winner of the Fred "Gus" Collins
Award presented earlier this spring by the Canada West regional
association, was nominated for the Sgambati Award by Brad
Woods, University of Regina sports information co-ordinator,
and Dick White, director of recreation and athletics.
"Ian is exceptional in his coverage
of university sport," said
White. "Not only is he there for the high-profile sports
but he also makes a concerted effort to cover the sports
and the athletes that are not always 'top of mind' with
the readers. The profile of university sport in Regina has
grown in leaps and bounds in the last six years and there
is no question that Ian and the Leader-Post have
played a major role in that success story."
