Delegates support talks aimed at streamlining
TNG Canada relationship with parent unions
TNG Canada/CWA
VICTORIA — Delegates to the TNG Canada/CWA
Representative Council meeting have backed continued talks
to look at streamlining the way the Canadian union relates
to its larger parent unions.
But they made it clear they want nothing that jeopardizes
the strong relationship they already have within the international
and the many benefits it provides.
Chris Grogan, president of IUE-CWA
(TNG Canada Local 80400 in Waterloo, Ont.), was one of
the strongest voices for ensuring nothing is lost in the
streamlining. He summed up his views with “Why fix it if it ain’t
broke?”
In the end, delegates supported developing
some key principles that must underpin any talks, such
as ensuring nothing jeopardizes the legal program, which
many said was a fundamental tool they need in dealing with
their employers. Another key factor put on the table by
the body was ensuring that the Director’s
job becomes full-time, so he or she can devote more time
to helping TNG Canada grow.
Delegates also approved a bylaw change
making the two regional vice-presidents from Eastern and
Western Canada – who
sit on the TNG/CWA Sector Executive Council in Washington – full
voting members of the TNG Canada executive council. Previously,
they could attend meetings and speak but not make motions
or vote.
The conference once again discussed
the two web sites operated by the union — www.YourMedia.ca and www.TNGCanada.org.
While there was concern that TNG Canada get value for the
money it spends on the sites – a projected $60,000
in the new budget – there was recognition a top-notch
web site is a must for any organization these days. The Communications
Committee was directed to closely monitor web expenditures
to ensure the money is spent wisely.
Meanwhile, Grogan was named the new
chairman of the Organizing Committee after former chairman
and Deputy Director Martin O’Hanlon stepped down.
It was the last meeting of Eastern Canadian vice-president
Percy Hatfield, in that role at least. He stepped down and
was replaced at the TNG/CWA Sector Conference by Jan Ravensbergen,
President of the Montreal Newspaper Guild.
