wins $1,000 scholarship

Second scholarship soon up for grabs

TNG Canada/CWA

Charlie Greenwell, a veteran reporter at CJOH Television in Ottawa, was the bearer of exciting news when he contacted his 21-year-old daughter today.

Clare Greenwell, a third-year psychology student at Trent University, is the winner of the $1,000 scholarship from TNG Canada/CWA.

"This will help, big time," says Charlie, whose 19-year-old son, Andrew, is preparing to attend college. The elder Greenwell is a member of the Ottawa Newspaper Guild (TNG Canada Local 30205).

Since beginning her studies at Trent in Peterborough, Ont., Clare has helped pay for her education by working part-time. She has held jobs at a variety of places, including CHUM Radio, The Wine Rack, Canadian Tire and a fast-food restaurant.

TNG Canada received about 170 applications for the cash bursary.

A second $1,000 scholarship will be up for grabs in the near future. TNG Canada expects to announce details and the deadline for applications on this web site within a few weeks.

Members of the Guild or a dependent child or partner of a member in good standing are eligible. At the time of the award, the applicant must be able to confirm full-time attendance at, or acceptance to, an accredited college, university, technical or trade school.

A random draw determines the winner.
