International group's awards, fellowship
open to women journalists
International Women's Media Foundation
(IWMF)
Courage in Journalism and Lifetime Achievement
Awards
The IWMF is seeking nominations for
its 2005 Courage in Journalism Awards and Lifetime Achievement
Award.
Each year the IWMF honours three international
women journalists who have demonstrated extraordinary strength
in the face of oppression, political pressure and risk
of physical danger with Courage in Journalism Awards. The
IWMF’s Lifetime Achievement
Award recognizes a pioneering woman journalist whose strength
and determination have paved the way for future generations
of women in the media.
Nominations for the 2005 awards
will be accepted by the IWMF between January 1, 2005
and March 15, 2005.
Candidates for the Courage Award can
be full-time, part-time or freelance women reporters, writers,
editors, photographers or producers working in any
country. Candidates for the Lifetime Achievement Award can
be either working or retired journalists. Self-nominations
will not be accepted for either award.

Elizabeth Neuffer Fellowship Program for
Reporting on Human Rights and Social Justice
The IWMF is accepting applications for
the Elizabeth Neuffer Fellowship, a new program that supports
journalists who report on human rights and social justice.
The
fellowship is named after Elizabeth Neuffer, a Boston
Globe reporter and 1998 Courage in Journalism Award
winner who was killed in Iraq in May 2003. The fellowship
was created in co-operation with Neuffer’s
family and friends to advance her life’s mission of
promoting international understanding of human rights.
One
woman journalist will be selected to spend an academic year
that combines research at Boston-area universities with access
to The Boston Globe and New
York Times. The fellowship will
run from September 2005 – May 2006. Applications are
being accepted until February 25, 2005.
