CBC plan for centre causing job anxiety

Canadian Media Guild | TNG Canada Local 30213

Members of the Canadian Media Guild who work in human resources, finance and information technology at the CBC will discover over the hazy-lazy weeks ahead how a "shared services centre" will affect their jobs.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation announced that it intends to establish such a centre by this fall to process the high-volume transactional activities in those departments.

The CMG doesn't know how the decision, or the implementation of Web-based technologies, will affect its members. The CBC has, however, committed to consult with the Guild over the summer to discuss the plan.

The Guild is pleased with the Corporation's statements that "Senior management is convinced that our employees have not only the dedication, but the skills and ability to deliver on our goal." The CBC also made a commitment to train staff and be sensitive about the effects on people whose jobs might change.

While the Guild is willing to co-operate with the CBC, its objectives will be to minimize the impact on workers, ensure their contractual rights are respected and continue to demonstrate to CBC that Guild members — with competent management at the helm — are second to none.
