"We don't have any details on which jobs will be cut," says Arnold Amber, Director of CWA|SCA Canada. "But you can't get rid of 350 newspaper jobs and not affect editorial quality. This is bad news for employees and bad news for newspaper readers."

"Taken all together, these actions mean Canwest has eliminated nearly 10 per cent of its workforce this year," Amber adds. "Most of the employees affected were involved in local news. Local TV viewers and newspaper readers will feel the effects of these drastic cuts."

The union represents employees at The Gazette in Montreal, The Ottawa Citizen, the Windsor Star, the Regina Leader-Post and the Victoria Times-Colonist.

The Canadian Media Guild, CWA Canada's largest Local, represents about 100 people at Alliance Atlantis, where 23 jobs are expected to be cut.
